Dr. Unno is very passionate about what he teachers, but I never felt as engaged during the lectures compared to other religion profs that I had. 4 essays, 2 exams, and 1 presentation which were quite a lot, but graded by GEs. So just hope that the GE is fair and easy grader.

Professor Unno is an incredibly kind and funny lecturer. He makes participating in class welcoming and encouraging. He talks a lot about his experiences in his life, which I enjoy, but sometimes doesn't address the course materials thoroughly. If you want to meet with Unno, you won't get a chance unless you go to his office hours.

One of the best lecturers ever, but not too much else going on in class. Thumbs up for humor.I was assigned 4 essays over a term so it's not too bad but he only grades on that, attendance, and like 2 tests that felt kind of meaningless. GEs grade essays.

The lectures felt up to interpretation and It was so hard to pay attention, it didn't feel retainable/concise. I don't feel like I learned much which is frustrating bc I really wanted to like it. Maybe if u don't have ADHD you'd enjoy this class more than me, but I felt consistently confused and like I was not given tools to succeed

This class was SO philosophical and the teachings weren't very concrete. Everything felt open to interpretation which made it hard to follow along with the concepts. My GE graded hard too and I hated the GE discussions because it was so dry. I like Mark Unno, he's really funny and passionate about learning, but I wouldn't recommend the class.

You are graded on 3 papers and 2 exams. Plus a discussion grade that theres no criteria for so it seems like he just makes up a random grade. An extremely particular grader and takes off half points for no reason. so hard to maintain an overall A with such little assignments, no rubrics, and random harsh grading. I was excited but now disappointed

Professor Unno is a really caring guy, but his lectures tend to be all over the place and just summarize the readings. Your grade comes pretty much only from the papers which are graded by your GE. The class is VERY PHILOSOPHICAL which I wish I had known. You also get a grade for showing up to your discussion.

Attendance is required for discussion, grading is done by GE, graded by just a few things so it's difficult to raise your grade a lot bc the GE grades hard. Prof always willing to answer questions. Can pass without doing a majority of the readings and attending dis. More papers/essays than tests.

Professor Unno is a very kind man and was always a pleasure to talk to in lecture. There is a fair amount of reading but most isn't tested on, it's more useful for writing the short papers. I would recommend this course to anyone interested in learning more about Asian religions.

I signed up to take a class for the Dark Self, east/west comparative religion. Instead what I got were unrelated books and movies that half one sentence each that could be interoperated as "the dark self". In reality, these were just a list of things he liked. His lectures were 60% him just telling stories of his life and laughing at himself.

I took this class because I've heard really good things about it. We read about a book(200-300pg) a week plus 15-30pm excepts. Tests are easy, but it was not as great as I expected. He focuses a lot on punctuation and grammar which was about half of the first exam. And he doesn't use canvas so we never know our grades.

Horrible presentations. He's a fun guy who seems really into what he's teaching, but it is impossible to follow his lectures. Instead of power points or slide shows he puts a few notes in a html document and open his computers note pad to write down extra notes while he lectures. You can see it on his website. Also a very hard grader.

This is the best class I have taken at U of O so far. It gives incredible insight into the dark side of self in religion just like the title suggests. Beyond that, it really teaches you a lot about yourself, I started my journey of self-discovery, which is something I did not think I would be saying. It is an amazing class, I highly recommend it.

Guys. Take this class. I have learned more about myself through learning about the dark self than at any other point in my life. Not to mention Mark is one of the funniest, nicest and most intellectual professors I have ever had, and never have I been bummed when the hour and fifty minutes is up and I have to wait to go to class again. I do recommend that you keep up with the reading, but if you get a little behind Professor Unno will cover the material thoroughly in class. Highly recommended!

Too hard of a grader for a 101 class. GE grades, but follows Unno's guidelines and it's a bit ridiculous. I'm no straight A student, but I do well on essays and I got a grade I wasn't expecting. My GE later said it's hard to receive an A on essays in this class. Essays are a good part of the class. First test also included Q's about grammar? Why?

Interesting, engaging lectures. He's a cool guy that always has interesting stories to help you understand. A lot of papers and a couple tests, and a ton of reading, but the whole class is fairly laid-back and interesting so it doesn't feel like a big workload.
